PURCHASE OF CAR

(Own Correspondent).

Plunket Society Discussion

WAIKAWA, ijast JNlgUt. In the early part oi Jast year the Waipawa branch of the Plunket Society decided to dispose of the aar then being used by the nurse, as it had §een considerable serviee, and the upkeep was becoming exceptionally heavy. The moneys obtained from the sale were to form the basis of a fund to secure a new car. Later in the year a gymkhana was held and a further amount was placed to the credit of the car fund, while several efforts by members in the country districts substantially increased the amount available. A balance sufficient to enable the purchase of another car was secured when the society entered a candidatc in the recent bathing belle competition. The matter had several times been considered by the committee, and tne desire expressed that any car bought should be a new one. The purchase at the end of last year of a second-hand car resulted in a meeting of financial members and supporters being held in the Council Chambers last evening to discuss the matter. There was a very large attendance, and the Rev. F. W. Robertson was voted to the chair. Mr. C. G. E. Harker, as a member of the advisory committee, gave a detailed statement of the cireumstances under which a second-hand car which had dono very little work had been acquired just before the Christmas holidays. He stated that under the limited time allowed for an option it was impossible to call a meeting of the committee, and a majority consulted by telephone had sanetioned the purchase. After a considerable amount of discussion a motion to adhere to the proposal to purchase a new car and dispose of the one now being used was carried on the vote by. 27 to 10. The chairman expressed the hope that whatever differences may have arisen in connection with the matter should not be allowed to affect the good work which the society was doing.
