Letters to the Editor
DEFEATING PROGRESS (To the Editor) Sir,-— What a curious thing that every project for development of almost any kind has to be attacked by facetious opposition from certain quarters, more especially meinbers of public bodies. The Clive Sports Grounds^ Ltd. has so far advanced with its project of developing and beautifying 25 acros of freehold that we are now preparing for the next stage viz., Teclaiming, ploughing and grassing, planting and develnping as part of a golf course 130 aeres of Eiver Board land (now a waste of water, weeds, mud ete.). We know the Eivers Board can lease this. They have done so for many years, and we hold an option on the present lease. As the&e leases are for only 5 yeaTS, we must know before we entertain any proposal or make ah offer if the board has power to grant, sar a 25-years lease. With the chairman of the board I went over the properties and explained our proposals. If he was in doubt about finance it was his duty then to aisk me and I could have satisfied him. I also discussed the power — to lease for a long term — with the secretary of the Eivers BoarjJ, and to put him and the board on side I wrote a formal letter so that they could investigate and see if a long lease could be granted. From your newspaper report this request was ignored. The development of this area, by canalising and deepening Muddy Creek, will be of very great . assistance to Clive and Mangateretere settlers. The neglect of this creek has been a burning question for years among the ratepayers of the Eivers Board and the County Couneil and our suggestion to the Eivers Board to assist fmancially in the work of canalising, to maintain and keep clean the main part of this creek for a long period of years, paying them double the rent they are getting at present, meete with chilfiish remarks from one member. As for the chairman 's remarks, I think they were tactless. — Yours, etc., J. A. HILLES. Hastings, March 2. 1937.
