Irrigation Will Bring New Problems

(By Teleerraph— J

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The future . of farming in the South [sland may be deterjnined in a large neasure by the development of irriga;ion, according to the Minister of Agriuilture, the Ilon. W. Lee Martin, who aas just compieted a tour of inspecdon of the irrigation areas. The Minister, in an interview to-day, said that present knowledge pointed to bhe use oi sheep rather than dairy aattle on account of the severity of bhe winters and the shortness ot the season. "Irrigation,'- the Alinister added, "will bring special problems not now existent. In districts with low rainfall the natural fertility may be very high, but the action of the water will tend to exhaust this and manuring will in time become inevitable."
