KEY-OF-THE-DOOR DANCE AT WAIPUKURAU FOR MR RALPH SMART
The Masonic Hall, Waipukurau, presented a very gay scene on. Saturday evening when Mr and Mrs H. B. Smart, Tavistock road, entertained reiativeg and numerous friends at a delightful danee, the occasion being tlie coming-of-age of their only son Ralph. The danee hall looked particularly gay canopied in multi-coloured streamers, attached to a big inverted umbrella of streamers in tne centre of the ceiliug. The walis and corner s of the room were screened with-native shrubs, the lights with orang© shades casting a soft glare on the many pretty frocks. The small stage, charmingly arranged with sofas .and easy chairs and decorated with greenery, made a cosy lounge. Te Tau's orchestra, placed at. oue end, played popular danee music, having to respond to numerous encores. During the evening a pianoforte duet was rendered by Miss Mavis King and Mr Colin Cook, and songs by Mr H. M. Christie, M.P. Mr C'olin Cook made a most efficient M.C, "The supper-room decorations were carried out in tonings of pink and white, while tall vases of pale pink and white blossoms adorned tlie tables, and the handsome birthday cake with its 21 candles was mueh admired. After a delectable supper had been gerved, the toast to th© guest-of-honour was proposed by the Mkyor, Mr I. W. N. Mackie, who congratulated Mr f Ralph Smart on attaining his majority and wishgd him the best of luck, long iife and happiness. Se then called upon Ralph' s small cousin Renneta Kummer to present him with the customary gold key, which was done in a most eharming manner, and quoted the following: "I give you this key to open the door, and hope you won't come home too late." Mr Ralph Smart suitably responded and thanked his parents for giving him such a delightful party. The toast to Mr and Mrs Smart was proposed by Mr Christie who, on behalf of those present thanked them for their hospitality, stating that Ralph was a worthy son of wprthy parents, Mr and Mrs Smart being held in high( esteem by the eitizens of Waipukurau. Mr Smart responded on behalf of his wife and himself, thanking the speiakers for all their kind remarks and proposed a toast to his mother, his son Ralph being her first grandchild to attain his majority. All the toasts were received with musical honours and after the age-old custom of "blowing out tli© candles", the cutting of the cake was performed by the guestof- honour. Dancing was resumed until midnigh/t, when the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a happy evening to a close. Mr and Mrs Smart received the guests, tljte latter Wearing a smart gown, fashioned in suede satin worn with a blaek panne velvet coat lined with cream satin, and a shoulder posy of shaded pink polyanthus roses. Mrs L. D. Smart (grandmother), blaek silk marocain inset with bands of blaek lace. Mrs M. Kummer (aunt), smart gown in silver-grey georgette and lace. Miss Thelma Smart (aunt), dainty frock in pale salmon pmk and blue floral georgette. Mr H. M. Christie, M.P. and Mrs Christie, the latter wearing deep red silk lace and georgetfe, the rounded neckline finished with diamante clasp. Others present included.-r— Mr anu Mrs H. Another of the popular and successful dances organised by the Napier High School Old Boys' Football Club, was held in the Vietoria Hall, Napier, on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance, including some of the visiting athletes, who had been co-mpeting at the championsliip meeting earlier in the evening. A very pleasant evening . was spent by all.
