Otane Gathering

At the monthly meeting of the Otane Women 's institute held in the Towa Hall, Mrs E. H. Tod presided over a good attendance of members. . The motto for- the month was "Be not siiuply good, be good for sometUiug. ' A vote of sympathy to the familv of the .lato Mrs J. Bibby was passed. It was decided to plant two trees t6 "commemorate the Coronation in May. Congratulations were extended to Miss Jerome Spencer, founder of the Women 's Institute, on the honour recently conferred upon her. Mrs Barrie gave a most interesting and helpful talk on fhe treatment of burns and cuts. The talk and the many useful hints given were much appreciated by members. The competitions, cushion from sugar bag, vase of flowers, and jar of mixed pickle, were won by Mesdames A. Bull, Macdougall, F. Smith, Crawley and Spargo, Jnr. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames M. and F. Smith, R. H. Tod and F. Scrimgeour. Xmas Party. On Tuesday afternoon the Women 'a Institute held i,ts postponed children 's Xmas party when the members' children and those of St. Hilda's were entertained in the Town Hall. The hall and supper-room were gaily decorated, lending a festive air to the occasion.. The president, Mrs Tod, welcomed the young guests, who spent a very jolly timo with games, competitions ahd community singing. Tap dauces by Frances Pilcher and recitations by Mrs Walker, Waipawa, were much enjoy ed. A novel item, Micky Mouse 'a wedding, eaused much fun. All wearing gay paper hats, the children made a colourful scene when they sat down to a sumptuous after- _ noon tea, which was enjoy ed to the full. Bags of sweets and squeakers were presented to each of the small guests, who gave hearty cheers for their hostesses.
