MISS J. SPENCER' O.B.E.' GUEST OF HONOUR AT TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD
The Napier Townswomen's Guild mot for -the first time this year on Wednesday afternoon in the" Foresters ' Hall, when Miss Jerome Spencer, O.B.E., was the guest of honour. The stage pre sented a very .gay appearance/ with its bowls o'f autumn flowers arranged by the gardening section. After the business of the meeting had been - dealt .with, Mrs. E. A. W Henley, chairman, congratulated Miss Spencer on the honour she had received and spoke briefly of her great work foi New Zealand women. On behalf of thg members she presented Miss Spencer with a beautiful bouquet in autumn
tones composed of gladioli, carnations, fuscliias and rosebuds. Miss. Spencer' respondcd.and' in a modest speeeh thanked the members'for their kind thoughts. She said she felt that the credit for tho wonderful growth of Women's Institutes and Guilds belonged mainly to the women themselves who had carried on the work. During ' the afternoon Mesdames Berry and Fairey played a delightful piano duet and Mrs. Sorrell sang two solos which were very much appreciated. Three members of the literary section, Mesdames Barnett, O'Halloran and Sweetapple read Bernard Shaw's clever play, "How He Lied to Her Husband." Mrs. Henley, who leaves shortly on a visit to England, waa presented with a silver-backed Hairbrush as a token of the esteem in which she is held by the Guild, where she has worked wholeheartedly as its chainnan since 1933. Later afternoon tea, was served and a busy half ho.ur spent diseussing prospects for "the new year 's work. The annual meeting and election of now committee is to be held on March 4.
