SHOWMEN ARRESTED
Unusual Circumstances Two showmen, Herbert Allan Bowie and Jaoies Maurice O 'Connor, appeared in the Dannevirke Magistrate's Court before Mrv N. Welfley, J.P. Bowie, Who appeared for default of maintenance, was discharged, the complaint being withdrawn on payment of arrears to date. The circumstances attending C'Connor's arrest were unusual. He went .to the police station to make inquiries regarding the defendant Bowie, and the police believed him to be a man wanted in connection with a case at Dunedin. He was asked to return for some reason, and then was taken in charge. O 'Connor was charged that on September 14, 1936, at Dunedin, he did with intent to defraud, obtain from Frances Reid the sum of £6 by means of a certain false pretence, to wit, by falsely representing tbat he had had an accident to a lrand in a sawmill at Balclutha, and that he was on his way to see his solicitor, Mr. O'Leary, of Wellington, and was certain of £250 damages. Defendant was remanded to appear at Napier on February 16.
