Hopes to Have Two New YA Stations
(Bv Teleernrh-
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 3. The Director of Broadcasting, Professor James Shelley, to-day emphasis-. ed that building projects undertaken by the Nationai Broadcasting Service would absorb only & small portion of ,the licence fees paid by listeners. "It is recognised by the Government as being unfair that the listeners of the present day should pay for the listeners of the future," said Professor Shelley. "It has therefore been stipulated that only a fair and reasonable amount in the way of charges for build* jing programmes should come out of tho Ifees, "I am hoping — and at present it is |sothing more than a hope — that within jthree or four years there will be new •YA stations both at Christchurch and ,at Dunedin," he continued. More creative work would be t-n-jcouraged in all the centres, and not ionly in the centres but right througnlout New Zealand. "I am taking 3teps now towhrd that end," he added. "The object is to have nnifying centres for creative work established. " That did not mean centralisation in W ellington but the opposite. It was obvious that for orgauising purposes there must be centralisation to some extent, but that was uhavoidable. The future of broadcasting in New Zealand depended on the development of creative work within the country, and it was thus the duty of the broadcasting service to see that everyone had the opportunity to raise the standr ards. "We will soon have a differout jstandard of work altogether," added 'Professor Shelley. ' 1
