Machinery From England REARMAMENT PRESSURE P , ^ftsoP»n!lo^ • CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Re-armament in England is hampering manufacturers in Christchurch, according to statementB made at a meeting to-night of the Council of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association. It was said that engineering firms in Eng'land were too busy to deal adequately with orders from New Zealand and it was suggested that the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. i Sullivan) be- asked to remove the duty from American machinery to allow local manufacturers to carry on their industries unhampered. The Council received a ietter trom Mr Sullivan stating that he had been approached by a woollen manufacturing company which was unable to • obtain machinery from England. The company had suggested that he take the matter up witlx manufacturers in the United Kingddm. The Minister suggested that as other industries were probably in similar difficulties, a combiued approach might be made through the High Commissioner to Brtish manufacturer; t'o ascertain whether they were prepared to xionsider the manufacture x plant and machinery which is at present obtainable only from foreign countries. It was decided to piaee before the •Minister specific cases of manufacturers who were unable to obtain machinery from England with a view to having the duty remitted on An^eriean machinery to fulfil the needs of these manufacturers.
