Trouble Over Impounded Cattle Charged with assaulfc, Frank Me» Grath appeared before Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Hastings Magistrato'a Court this morning. Defendant pleaded gfailty and was fined i£2, in default 14 days' imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Sivyer said that Mc~ Grath had assaulted Mr H. A. Greeq, the borough ranger, who was about ta warn him concerning cattle which wera wandering on the road at the time. There was no suggestion of serious injury having heen inflicted, but Mr Green suffered duts and had his shiit torn. McGrath was quite a good citizen and had no previous police record. Mr W. Selwyn Averill, defendin'g, said that defendant' s cows were being driven frqm his dairy back to tbe Daddock when the ranger, who had iinpounded his cattle a week beforet, called him oyer and insulted him. .McGrath had asked him to withdraw the remark used. The ranger refused, so he caught hold of him and asked him again. The Magjstrate pointed out that to interfere with a ranger in the exeeution of his duty was a serious matter. The fine was generally more substantial, but in the circumstances he would treat him lightly. Time to pay was granted.
