(To the Editor.) . Sir, — I cannot let the oecasion pass — the historical oecasion I should add — "of the parting of the ways" of the "Hawke's Bay Merald," without giving my meed of praise to the long and honourable record carried out by this early newspaper since 1857. One need only read one of the early copies of this journal to find the wealth of history, local and general, dealing with the early days of Hawke's Bay. At the moment I am, reading a copy of the "Herald" dated January, 1864, 73 years ago, where Mr Colenso asked the Superintendent "if the Government have, during the past year, been able to effect anything towards securing a portion of the Ahuriri Plains for the use of agricultural settlers," and then follows a discussion by such men as McLean, Russell, Kennedy, Juke, Curling, Colenso, Dolbel, Fitzgerald, Tiffen, Rhodes and so on — names to be conjured with. What a fund of knowledge and information would have been lost but for ' ' our ' Herald " I thus speak affectionately of the old paper, for long have I, through my late father, been assooiated with its reading, and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to follow the splendid articles by Charles Price, so long connected with the paper 's success. I trust the old "Hawke's Bay Herald," in its new association with the well-known "Tribune," will continue in its original purpose — to advance the prosperity and happiness of the people of Hawke's Bay. — Yours,
etc.,
Taupo, Jan. 20, 1937.
