LOWER DAIRY RETURNS

Companies Say Guarantee Is Not Adequate

DOES NOT C0VER RISE IN COSTS

(By Telegranh—

PALMERSTON N., Jan. 21. Owing to rising costs the farmer would .be slightly worse off at the bnd of this season than he was last seasan and would have to accept lower net returns when things were analysed, according to Mr J. Craig, Oroua Downs, chairman of the executive of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies' Association, which met to-day. It waJs decided fully to support the following resolutions from the South Auckland Dairy Association': — "That as it was the intention of the Government when bringing down its legislation to increase wages, which results in increased costs, the guaranteed price fixed this season is not a fair and equitable one for the dairy-farmer and we demand an immediate review of the position and an increase in. the guaranteed price for this season to cover the extra manufacturing and farming costs to which the dairy-farmer is subject." "That the dairy companies here represented emphatically protest -against the system of pooling butter boxes to be administered ,by the Dairy Board and demand the right to purchase butter containers as in the past. Further, as butter boxes made of New Zealand timber are purchasable in Australia at prices substantially lower than those now being charged in New Zealand we consider the present position an exploitation of the dairy industry and demand that all regulations and restrictions against the importation of butter boxes or cheese crates be removed immediately. ' ' It was decided to ask the National Dairy Federation to convene a meoting of representativeis of the various associations in Wellington the day before the Dairy Board eonference so as to have' the opportunity of conferrlng and reaching uniformity in policy concerning price fixation, butter ,box costs and other matters to be dealt with at tho eonference.
