CRITIC.
Light Opera (To the Editor.) Sir, — -I wonder how mueh longer the long-suff'ering publie is going to stand some of the ' ' thin stuff" that J. C. Williamson, Ltd., presents in their socalled country tours? If any amateur company tried to put across what was presented here on Wednesday evening, they would no doubt be severely criricised. I arn not complaining of the opera itself, of the story, or of the leading artists. But why the delay between the acts, the depleted chorus, and gawky extras 2 No matter how brilliant the leads may be, it takes good, .sparkling, solid chorus work to give support and send the show along. I have seen iocal amateur companies present Gilbert and Sullivan Opera that would put Wednesday night 's performance to shame. The amateurs are right up on their tip-toes, giving their very best, because they fee'l that they are being eompared with the professional company. If J.O.W. cannot present something more solid, then they should forget Gilbert and Sullivan for the. next 20 years, and not prolong the dying kick. —
Yours, etc.,
