FAREWELL EVENING AND BIRTHDAY PARTY HELD

At the home of Mr and Mrs H.' Batt, Southampton road 1W., Hastings,- a-fare- - well evening was tendered to Mr jand Mrs A. Batt. The occasion was- also the birthday of Joyce, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Batt. ' Th» dual f ■ unction - was well organised, as testified by the array of talent present. Tlie ever-popular '/ 500 ' ' game of cards attracted the usual number of devotees. Mr J. Beale carried off the men's prize, and Mrs A. Batt the ladies' The booby prize fell to Mr T. Thornburrow to the accompaniment ■ of much laughter. A very amusing game, "Find the Handkerchief , " provoked a great deal of fun. It was a well-cbnceived idea, and was the cause of much chagrin - to the owner of the article owing to its elusiveness. It was a most interesting item an,d calculated to drive away the blues. Mr T. Thornburrow proved a very versatile conjuror and illusionist . and this item might well ' have been featured as a professional turn with a hundred per cent. success. ' • A dainty supper was served, after whifch Mr MeMillan spoke in complimentary terms of Mr and Mrs Batt and expressed the hope that their long holiday trip from Auckland was justified. The speaker also expressed a wish that at some future date they would again have the pleasure of their company. Mr A. Batt suitably replied' and assured those present that he' had eontemplated another trip very sooh. The feature he admired in ; Hastings; ' in faet, Hawke's Bay, was the hospitality, of its people and he would carry with* him very happy memories of his holi- ' day.
