FARMERS’ UNION

MONTHLY MEETING HELD

There was a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Kaponga branch of the farmers- Union which was held at the Oddfellows’ Hall oil Thursday evening. The president. Mr. ‘ D.' P. F- Malone, presided and crave a brief resume of the work of the "recent annual conference at HaIt was stated that the judging <u the root crops had been carried out that day by Mr. C. Haynes of the Department of Agriculture, vho ex * pressed himself as being more than pleased with the quality of the crops. The judging commenced in the morning and was continued throughout the day until darkness set in. An adjournment for afternoon tea was made at Mr. 11. A. Grace’s farm, the president returning- thanks to Mrs Grace for the hospitality. Olio field had yet to be judged after which the result would be announced. . At the conclusion of the ol the meeting Mr. R. A. Grace read a paper on agriculture which was recently delivered to the Cawthron Institute by Lord Bledisloe. The reading was followed with great interest and at the conclusion an instructive Jjalf lioui was spent in questions and general discussion on the paper. ■ Mention was also made at the meetmo- of the recent lecture given under the auspices of the branch in conjunction with the Women’s Institute, by Mr Davies, of Duncan and Davies, New Plymouth, on tree planting and gardening. The lecture was largely attended and proved interesting and instructive.

LADIES’ HOCKEY

The Kaponga ladies’ hockey team played a home match on Thursday afternoon and was defeated by the Auroa team by four goals to one. For the first quarter of an hour or so play was of a fairly cvon nature and then from a good forward movement the balf went to the visiting centre forward, Miss J. Miller, who gave the visitors their first score. _ Give and take play followed until just before half time, when, from a penalty bully m front of the goal, Auroa scored a further goal, the spell finishing: Auroa 2, Kaponga nil. . . Upon resuming the visitors, with good forward work, soon had the home team working hard. Within two minutes from the bully-off the visitors centre forward netted another goal. Good defence by the Kaponga backs prevented further immediate scores and give and take play followed for some time until the ball came from the right wing to Miss V. King, who succeeded in shooting Auroa’s fourth goal. From the succeeding bully-off the home team put in some solid work which resulted in Miss T. Gargan obtaining the ball from a scrummage and netting Kaponga’s only goal. The Rev. Ryburn was referee.

MEN’S HOOKEY

Following the ladies’ match the men’s competition was resumed, Kaponga taking the field against Otakeho. These two teams have been great rivals during the season and one of the largest crowds seen at hockey in Kaponga, assembled to witness what promised to be a great struggle. Expectations of a hard game were realised for the first quarter of an hour, when the visitors, by dint of sound defence, were able to keep the home backs at bay. Shortly afterwards, as a result of excellent forward work, S. Betts shot Kaponga’s first goal. Further -play in both sides’ territory ensued for some time, the home team struggling bard to -score until finally V. Betts added another goal. Pressure by the home team still continued until just before half time when S. Betts shot liis second goaL The second spell opened with Kaponga attacking vigorously, their combination being too much for the visitors and five goals were netted durum this spell. They were obtained by K. Belli (2). F. Albon (1). and G. Pasco© (2). Although the visitors put in -some solid work in an endeavour to even up the scores a little they were unsuccessful and the game ended Kaponga 8, Otakeho nil. The Rev. Ryburn and Mr. C. Harding controlled the game.
