PENNY POSTAGE.

. HOPELESS IN AUSTRALIA. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 29, 11.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 29. A reduction in postage rates from 2d to lsd, which has been in operation now for twelve months, has, according to a statement by the Postmaster-Gen-eral, resulted in a falling off of revenue to the Department of approximately £1,100,000. Recent awards of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, granting increased wages to employees, have increased the Departments wages bill by about £400,000. Under the circumstances there- is little likelihood of a return to penny postage in the near future.
