THE PRINCE OF WALES
HIS- AWFUL ORDEAL
LONDON, Aug. 31. There has been wide discussion of an American, dispatch, purporting td describe an outburst by the Prince' of Wales to a passenger on the Bereni garia „at 3 a.m. “Gan you imagine the torment of having the eye of every person boring, into you every second ,°f every day?” the .Prince is reported to have asked. “I hate this ‘bunk.’ It-is loathsome,. X have to go through endless and meaningless ceremonies.’’ The editor of the People, Mr. Hannen Swaffer, has issued an appeal to give the Prince a chance. He says that it is easy to understand' the bouthfl-iiiptoM incident, when h& refused to be photographed, eveii after 50 -newspaper. representatives signed a round-robin • asking him to appear on deck.- He asesrts tliat the Prince fled from Toquef and' Deauville in order t<> avoid the curious crowds there. - •
Xhe Prince appealed to the.. photographers, saying, “Please gb away I am sick to death. I can’t have one day to myself.”
Swaft’er contrasts the Prince s life with that of his grandfather, when the latter s frequent visits to the National. Sporting Club were not mentioned, ami he could do anything he liked without any attention. Constant photographing and paragraphing has got on the Prince's nerves, and i+ m no wonder, that he is looking nervous and over-strained. Jt i s inconceivable that any human beiim can endure it much longer, sav S ” Mr Swatter.
