The Minister of Mines at Newcastle presented the Humane Society's medals to forty-three men who risked their lives in saving their comrades in the Stockton colliery disaster. Eighteen were also presented with gold medals awarded by the New South Wales Government. Lord Brassey highly eulogised the rescuers and said the Government intended in future to similarly recognised bravery.
