In honor of his visit to Ireland the Duke of York was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, and he and Lord Roberts were invested as Knights of the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick. Lord Roberts, in the course of an interview, stated tbat no Afghans would join in the attack upon the British forces on the Afghan frontier unless they thought such action would please the Ameer. He added that there was no cause for anxiety. Since the death from ptomaine poisoning of two children at Lichfield after eating Australian mutton, one local dealer has bought 1000 carcases of Sydney frozen sheep August 21. The funeral of jhe late Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois, ex-Gover-nor of New Zealand, was attended by a number of representative colonials. New York, August 21. It is reported that damage lias been done to the spring crops in the west aud north-west. This is one year in advance of the time arranged for the repayment. Ottawa, August 21. Miners have arrived at Victoria, in British Columbia, from the Yukon river with 160,000 dollars' worth (£32,000) of gold dust. Berlin, August 21. The Cologne Gazette rebukes certain German newspapers for inciting Russia to take advantage of Great Britain's difficulties in India. The Gazette admits that German commerce has attained its present greatness chiefly through following in the wake of England. Cape Town, August 22. Three of the Matabele native police, who joined the rebels last year, have been sentenced to death for complicity in the murder of Major Graham and his party. A diamond area, covering 1000 square yards, has been discovery at Winbury in the Orange Free State, 65 miles north-west of Blomfontein. Sydney, August 22.
