( Per Press Assneiertion. —L'ojtyri'jht.) London, June 18. Mr E. T. Hooley, the millionaire, has made arrangements through the Foreign Office to construct railways in China at a cost of £8,000,000. The late Lady Wallace some time ago bequeathed to the British Nation Hereford House, with its pictures and famous art collection. The bequest is now valued at £4,000.000. There were 3387 cases of kauri offered at auction, and 1659 were sold. Three-quarter scraped brought 5s in advance. The stock consists of 1089 cases. June 20. it is understood that the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company ■ intends to lay a cable to connect Perth ("West Australia) with South Africa. Calcutta, June 19. Later reports show that the recent earthquake wrought appalling ruin in Assam, where enormous supplies of food •were destroyed. •June 20. The recent earthquake destroyed 50 miles of the Darjecliug railway. Bengal province. It is also feared that over 6000 persons were killed in Assam. The Queen has cabled her sympathy for the sufferers. - • Athens, June 20. "Soic levers have offered the Governorsfetp of Crete to M. Martin Jordan, ex-President of the Swiss Confederacy. Rome, June 20. The Chamber of Deputies has adopted the naval estimates, which provide for an increase of seven and a hall million lire.
