THE MURDERER BUTLER.

(Per Press As*o,-iati'>n—' 'i>j>yri<fltt.)

Ban Francisco, Feb. 18

Butler will be arraigned on the charge of murdering Preston on Monday. He denies that the cheque bookfound amongst his luggage belonged to Weller, but this has been proved by Miss Conroy's name which was written therein by herself. Butler states that he became possessed of Weller's goods because it was the custom to divide a dead miner's belongings among his comrades. He used Weller's name on his papers to Captain Fraser when he asked the latter for permission to work his passage on the Swanhikla, as Captain Fraser required to see his sailor's discharge. An affidavit has been sworn by Mr Elliott, engineer on the Monowai, denying Butler's assertion that he is Weller. Elliott states that he knew Captain Weller intimately. Detective Toche refuses to verify the rumor in circulation that he has sent the names to Sydney of two men alleged to have been Butler's partners in the Glenbrook murders.
