OUR LETTER BOX.
THE EDUCATION QUESTION,
[To tfli EBitor.) , Sir,—l was very glad to see by your columns that Mr Graham has decided to resist any tampering with the primary system. As one who takes a great interest in our educational system, let me .thank ,you. for articles on the question which have recently appeared in the Standard. By all means let us do away with the expensive Universities and secondary schools which cost so much to maintain, but the raising of the school »ge and the doing away with the fifth and sixth standards will have a vary bad effect on the efficiency of the system as a whole. I see your paper sutU ports Mr McDonald for the elebtidti, in his address he says, “ I consider the cost of the present system of education bears too heavily on the ratepayers and that retrenchment in that direction is im lerative." Now, Sir, I would ask whether Mr McDonald means to vote for retrenchment of the primary or of the secondary education. Can you tell me which he means ? —I am, &c. CoVirißY TXAcfiii. [Although we cannot speak from dti authoritative point of vied* yet wefeel sure that Mr McDonald will not attack the primary system, but will advocate retrenchment in the Universities and secondary schools. Mr McDonald will no doubt fully answer our correspondent’s query when he addresses the electors here.—Ed.]
