Political Points.
Wellington, Last Night. John Duthie, the well-known Wellingtonian is named as a likely candidate for the proposed new central district of the city. In olden days Duthie was Ballance's leading backer at Wanganui, but is now a fierce Atkinson and Bryceite. He has done good work on the Wellington Harbour, Board, and is a keen Scotchman. He has got his head screwed on the right way. New Plymouth has a whole host of candidates, Mr Samuels, the present member, will stand again, as will S. E, Hughes, another lawyer, E. M. Smith, a working man candidate, and a popular settler named W. Bayly. W. McCardle is out for Wairarapa North as a Stoutist and Protectionist, He is a Masterton seedsman, a smart speaker, a member of Land Boards and a Scotchman, J. Gore is out forlDunedin South. Thomas Peacock is a candidate for Newton, He is likely to get in, Peter Cunningham, a local grain merchant, will run Vogel for Christchurch North, Rumour says Vogel will oppose George Fisher for Wellington South. Thia is not believed. It is not yet absolutely certain whether Sir John Hall will stand for Selwyn. If he does, Edward Wakefield will go for the Hutt seat against “ masher " Fitzherbert and a local man named Mason. Sir George Grey is going on the stump shortly. Bolleston will contest the Geraldine seat. Bruce, M.H.M. for Rangitikei, is to give freetrade lectures in Wellington. He is a young man, a Scotchman, shrewd, a good speaker, and has had a regular Colonial up-and-down sort of a life. Scob'e McKenzie is going to stump on the freetrade side. Little Dr Newman has got an opponent for Thorndon in Wm, McLean, the Wellington auctioneer and spiritualistic champion. Wm. Hutchinson, once of Wellington, now of Dunedin, is to be a candidate for Roslyn in the Vogel protection interest. Tauranga has about five would-be M.H.R.’s. The victory will lay between Grace and Kelly. Sammy Vaile, of railway renown, is a candidate for the Waikato seat.
