Yet another illustration of the folly of reading in bed at Palmerston, Manawatu, the other day, at an inquest held on the body of one William Reed, the verdict was that Reed came by his death by being burnt in his whare. The evidence showed that he was in the habit of reading and smoking ‘ 1 bed, and from the position his remains were found in, it would seem that he was suffocated when trying to reach the door and fell back, subsequently being burnt. The N.Z. Times, the Wellington morning buster, is going baldheaded for protection. This is no doubt on account of the Post and Evening trees being strong freetraders. £319 14s 6d has been subscribed in Wellington for the Imperial Institute. It cost the Colony £1,493 for Ministers’ exes. Mr Larnach tops the list with £361. The “ Biggest wooden building in the world,” the Government Office in Wellington is to be insured for 50 thou. It is valued at 90 ditto.
