FORCED LABOUR FOR YOUNG GERMANS IN SOVIET
LONDON, Nov. 11. The Prime Minister of New Zealand (Mr Fraser) and the High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan), during their visits to displaced persons' camps in Germany, saw a large number of young Germans who had recently escaped from forced labour in the uranium mines in the Russianoccupied zone. More than 1700 of these Germans have .now been accommodated in British and American camps. Mr Jordan said that all the men appeared to be suffering seriously from malnutrition. They claimed that they had been forced to work 10 hours daily under guard, and that if they did not work hard enough to satisfy the Russians they were deprived of food. No provision whatever was made for treating accident cases, and because the mine tlifts and cages were broken the inen were forced to clamber up and down ladders to reach the shafts.
