DR. EVATT SEEKS A SETTLEMENT IN PALESTINE
(Rec. 9.30). PARIS, November 14. Dr Evatt has recommended, as President of the United Nations Assembly, the creation of a special fifty-eight nation committee to speed up the consideration of the Palestine deadlock, and also other problems. Dr Evatt’s plan has been announced to the U.N.O. Political Committee by the executive assistant to the United Nations secretary-general, M. Andrew Cordier, who stated that Dr Evatt felt that there is not enough time left in the remaining month of the session for the Political Committee to consider all of the problems before it. Therefore Dr Evatt has suggested this special 58-nation committee, which, if approved by the Steering Committee, could be approved by the General Assembly at a short plenary session on November 15. LONDON, November 13..
The United Nations spokesman in Haifa said the United Nations deputy chief of staff, Colonel George Millet, had ordered observers in Tel Aviv and Gaza to arrange for convoys to take non-military supplies to the Egyptian forces encircled in villages north of Gaza, reports Reuter’s Haifa correspondent. This follows a ruling by the acting Palestine mediator, Dr Bunphe, that, under the truce conditions the besieged Egyptians are entitled to re-ceive-non-military supplies by United Nations escorted convoys. STERN GANG AGAIN Stern Gang leaflets headed “Last Warning” and threatening action against the Israeli Government, were found plastered on the walls of Haifa to-day. The leaflets threatened withdrawal of support for the Israeli Cabinet if any Stern Gang members were imprisoned during their trial. CZECH MILITARY AID FOR THE JEWS LONDON, Nov. 12 Czechoslovakia has supplied the Israeli air force with at least 100 Messerschmitt fighting planes, according to Reuter’s Hof (Bavaria) correspondent, who quotes Jewish sources who asked that their identity be withheld for fear of reprisals. The source said that the CzechIsraeli “airbridge” was using the airfields at Zatec, Chomutov, Rokycany and Pisek as shipping points for supplies. The pilots flying supplies for Israel included former American air force officers and Hungarians.
