Watersiders’ Attitude at Auckland
AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. Auckland watersiders expected that when the Minister of Labour (Mr McLagan) came north this week a lead would be given on the future policy of waterfront control. However. no discussions with the watersiders’ leaders took place. The union leaders point out that six weeks have elapsed since the intermittent negotiations in Wellington commenced and, meanwhile, oO or more local disputes have piled up on the Auckland waterfront. Normally these are dealt with by the port committee, whose recommendations except in cases of national significance ,are implemented by the Waterfront Industry ' Commission, but the port committee has not met since the Mountpark dispute. The watersiders are prepared io accept the retention of'commission control, but demand separation of its administrative and judicial functions, so that if a dispute arises they can appeal to a higher authority. It is understood that the watersiders intend pressing for Is an hour increase in wages.
