5,000,000 FOOD PARCELS FOR BRITAIN
LONDON, Oct. 12. More than 5,000,000 food parcels had been received from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and America and the Colonies, said the Food Minister, Mr John. Strachey. when he opened the “Britain Says Thank You” exhibition for food" gifts from overseas. “We assure the people of the Do minions,” he said, “that we are making the best possible use of their gifts.” Mr Strachey added that the exhibition had been arranged to coincide with the visit of the Dominion Premiers.
Record Load of Parcels A record shipment of parcels to lighten Britain’s Christmas will leave Wellington by the Corinthic tomorrow. . The consignment consists of /000 bags containing more than 31,000 parcels. Loading was started on Saturday morning and it is hoped that the parcels will be aboard this afternoon. Normally, parcels are only shipped from the four main centres, but. owing to exceptionally heavy postings, special sortings and dispatching facilities have temporarily been made available at Napier. This is to avoid parcels posted in the Gisborne, Napier Palmerston North, and Wanganui districts being sent to Wellington for sorting and then being railed to Napier. The Nelson Star and the Saxon Star will be leaving Napier in about a fortnight’s time and a quarter of their load of 8000 parcels will be sorted there. _
