Allan, vice-president of St Mary’s rugby football cluo presided at the annual banquet held at St Mary’s club rooms on Monday evening. There was a large attendance present including representatives c the Rugby Sub-Union and kindred clubs. A lengthy toast list was honoured. , , . Mr R. Quinn said the club intended to make an early start in their training next year, and it was hoped to send a team to compete in the annual Catholic rugby competition in Dunedin. The club’s junior . team had given a good account of itself during the season, and it was intended to draft a number of the players to the senior grade for 1949. The club continued to make steady progress, and it was pleasing to see the interest taken by older players an dto note that one of the players in his f'rst year had graduated to an All Black trialist. , , TT J Mr B. Kelly, selector to the West Coast Rugby Union replying to a toast, said that during the past season only four or five players in each team trained for the game, and the rest relied on the trained players to carry them through. It. was no use continuing along these lines. Players must take the game to heart, tram and be fit. The Coast was capable of producing first-class footballers, as had been proved. The material was still on the Coast, but only systematic training would bring out. the best. It was up to the players to take more interest in the game, and to do thenbest to be in top form throughout the Community singing and a number of vocal items together with some interesting talks on byegone days helped to make the evening a very pleasant one for all.
