Higher-placed Members Of Government Under Investigation

(Rec. 5.5). LONDON, October 5. Scotland Yard is making an investigation into the alleged irregularities in the issue of permits and licences for large consignments of merchandise. The investigation involves highlyplaced members of the Government department, according to 1 the Daily Telegraph. It is understood, says the Daily Telegraph, that Treasury legal advises brought the matter to the notice of the Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, after studying reports submitted to the Board of Trade and to other Government departments, by individual Scotland Yard officers. These officers have investigated numerous cases on behalf of the department during the past two years. It was decided that the whole case should be submitted to the Lord Chancellor as the highest legal authority in the country, because of the gravity of the allegations and of an implication that Junior Ministers might be among those involved.

The Daily Mail says: “Several Junior Ministers have been consulted”.
