BIG FRAUDS IN BRITAIN OVER TRADE PERMITS
Alleged Against Government Departments LONDON, October 4. The Lord Chancellor, Lord Jowitt, has asked Scotland Yard to investigate a number of serious allegations against a Government department concerning the granting of permits to commercial organisations..
Great secrecy has been maintained on the grounds that “it is not in the public interest to disclose the details’.’, but Reuter’s learns that the department concerned is the Board of Trade.
For several months Scotland Yard has been making inquiries in various parts of the country as to how certain materials of merchandise, notably textiles, including curtains, have, without purchase tax being charged or paid, been reaching certain places instead of going overseas. The Daily Mail says the amount of money involved in the alleged Board of Trade frauds is believed to reach £1,000,000. The investigations extend from the city of London to Scotland, Wales, and the south coast.
