Radar for Auckland Ships

AUCKLAND, October 1. Experimental radar equipment ! will soon be installed at the port j signal station on Mount Victoria. The purpose is to discover whether ■ q would be of value in plotting and identifying vessels in heavy weather when visibility is reduced. Similar experiments are be'ng made in ports throughout the world and in some cases radar is of immense benefit to port shipping control. The equipment is on loan to the Auckland Harbour Board from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Radar used in conjunction with the

radio-telephone would enable signal men to pilot a vessel entering the channel ai:d direct progress.. Thb nilot launch, already fitted with the radio-telephone, would also be kept in constant touch and have an accurate knowledge of a ship’s position.
