SOVIET DETAINS JAP FISHING VESSELS
(Reuter —N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7.20) TOKIO, Sept. 20. Three Japanese fishing associations in Hokkaido have jointly appealed to General MacArthur to prevent the Soviet detention of their vessels. The appeal stated that of ten Japanese vessels with crews totalling 50 detained, only four with crews totalling 23 had been returned. The appeal also charged the Soviet fishing boats in Japanese waters. It ships with having fired on Japanese admitted that Japanese ships in the past sometimes accidentally crossed the demaracation line in heavy fogs, but recently had exercised greater care, whereupon Soviet ships had advanced into Japanese water, fired shots and detained ships and their crews.
