In his report, the Principal, Mr W. M. Stewart, stated.—Since my last report, six girls and one ooy have been withdrawn and one boy admitted, leaving tire school roll at 177 boys and 168 girls—a total of 345. Owing to the prevalence of a form of influenza, the average attendance was 88 per cent.—considerably below the normal standard. During the terpi, Mr Mitchell had sick leave, but is back on duty. The high school and evening school sections began the new term on September 13, and the manual departments at the Greymouth and Hokitika centres the previous week. Good progress has been made with conditioning the quadrangle and the Education Department has given approval for the provision of heavier strips for delivering goods. With the incidence of good weather, the grounds are beginning to take on their normal apnearance, due to the diligence and skill of the grounds staff. Plans are ready for improvements to the staff room, and a beginning is to be made at once with the work. The installation of the heater in the girls’ cloak-room is awaiting the new electric lead-in which is to provide for two .heaters, and for certain necessary modifications to the service in two of the laboratories. Mrs Undrill, the domestic science teacher at Hokitika, has had to seek six weeks’ sick-leave on medical advice. It has been possible to make arrangements to carry on her work with Mrs C. H. Green. Din. H. Sc., on day duty, and Mrs Watt the two evening classes in dressmaking. In all other respects the two manual centres are carrying out their norma 1 third term programmes. Evening school. —Enrolments continue in quite satisfactory numbers, especially in several of the practical ’■lasses, in fact, enough to more than balance the .dropping off which i" aptto take- place at this stage. T'n'j attendance, remains satisfactory—m some classes excellent, though there are some instances in which, owing to the numerical weakness of the class, care must be taken to ensim" that the attendance does not fall below the necessary minimum. The third term opened with 36 boarders at the Hostel —19 boys and 17 girls. Two girls withdrew owing, to removal to another province. It is hoped to hold the annual boxing tournament at an' early date. Football and basketball are both drawing to a close. The annual games against Christchurch West High School at the end of last term resulted in a draw (for the second year in succession) in Rugby and a narrow defeat in basketball. Thanks are expressed to those narents who. in the season, offered help and hospitality in billeting members of the visiting teams. School subscriptions amounting to £4 bring the progress total for the year to £l2B Ils. Other receipts for transport expenses, total £l6 0s 6d. Payments—entertainment, material and repairs—£ll 3s Id, with accounts for £l7 10s outstanding, the cash balance is £3O 6s 10d.
