1000 IMMIGRANTS FOR NEW ZEALAND HYDRO WORKS
WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. One thousand additional workmen/ all single men, will be selected in the United Kingdom under the Government immigration scheme to accelerate progress in State hydro-electric development, said the Minister of Immigration, the Hon. A. McLagan, today. "This decision has been taken at the request of the Ministry of Works and on the advice of the Immigration Advisory Council”, said the Minister "The men to be selected will include carpenters, fitters,' .-turners, crane, shovel and dragline drivers, plumbers, drain-layers, electricians and labourers.
“In view of the magnitude of hydro-electric projects which the Government is anxious to push ahead, and of several other very large developmental works which are imminent, it will be apparent that there is ample scope for the various types of tradesmen to be selected”.
“There is ample room for these men on hydro-electric projects, in this country”, said the Minister in Charge of the State Hydro Department, Mr Semple, to-day. “We are seriously short of this type of labour. What we want really are competent, willing workers, men who are not afraid of hard work, who will pull thenweight and be an asset, instead of a liability, to the country”.
