Floods in Britain and North Italy
LONDON, September 15
Torrential rains caused floods today in West Scotland, Cumberland and Northern Italy. An overnight rainstorm, one of the worst in 30 years, flooded roads throughout West Scotland, cut telephone communications and caused hundreds of people to wade to work. Farmers are busy trying to save the harvest. It is reported that the storm is the worst disaster of the century. Glasgow had 161 points of rain in 11 hours. Lorries this morning took children to school thrugh streets under two to three feet of water. * Floods also occurred in all parts of Cumberland and the Border district with disastrous effects on the harvest.
Thousands of acres of farmlands have been submerged. Widespread flooding in he Solway of Firth area swept away animals and corn stocks.
Torrential rains caused floods which made hundreds homeless in Northern Italy. Two bodies were found in the flood waters near Turin. Many bridges were washed out. Homes and public buildings were heavily damaged in Piedmont Valley.
Typhoon Brings Flooding in Japan
(Rec. 10.10) TOKIO, Sept. 16 Heavy damage to Japan's rice crop is feared as the result of a typhoon which struck the central eastern coast of Japan to-day. Rivers which, last September, inundated the Kantem rice fields, as well as northern suburgs, of Tokio, have again reached danger levels with torrential rain still falling.
