17 KILLED ON ROADS IN AUGUST

WELLINGTON, Sept 7. Seventeen persons died in traffic accidents during August, said the Minister of Transport, the Hon. F. Hackett, irv Wellington to-day. While the death rate was below last year’s the road deaths, for 1948 now total 142. Seven of those killed during August were pedestrians, six were motor-cyclists and one a cyclist. Of the 16 fatal accidents during the month 10 occurred after dark. Mr Hackett stressed the need for the utmost care by all road-users, especially the pedestrians, to avoid tragedies.
