Boxing Notes
The Westport Boxing Association will soon be staging a professional boxing match between Laurie Peterson and Danny O’Keefe. It is about twelve years since a professional bout has been fought in Westport. Laurie Peterson has a good record since coming to New Zealand. He has victories over Paddy Slavin and lan Cruickshank, and he fought a. draw with Clarrie Gordon.' In his second fight he knocked Gordon out in the ninth round. Peterson _is a southpaw and uses his right in a manner that means disaster if landed. Danny O’Keefe has not had a fight for a while. He was billed to fight Johnny Best at Napier last month, but it did not come off for some unforeseen circumstances. O’Keefe is at the top of the middle-weight class, and Peterson is a welter-weight. This should make a good fight, as O’Keefe went the full twelve rounds with Murphy, and has sparred with many of the champions while abroad. The last professional fight in Westport was between Hanrahan and Monaghan. In engaging Laurie Peterson, the Association has proved what can be accomplished when a real attraction is provided for the fightfollowing public.
