PENSIONER BURNED TO DEATH AT HOME

*. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept 3. An elderly man living alone was burned to death at his home in Linwood early this morning. He was Ernest Arthur Mander, aged 70, a pensioner and widower, of No. 9, Barbour Street. Three men attempted to rescue Mander when the house suddenly became a mass of flames just after three o’clock, but locked doors prevented their entry into the house. On the arrival of two engines from the Central Fire Station, firemen broke into Manders’ bedroom, but he was already dead. He had evidently attempted to escape but was overwhelmed by smoke.
