Engineers to Press For Wages Rise

WELLINGTON, Sept 3. After discussing the Budget and the removal of the exchange rate the Wellington branch of the Engineers’ Union decided to ask the New Zealand Federation of Labour to press its claim for a general wage increase of £1 weekly and to initiate a claim for a similar increase for pensioners. The meeting stated that while there would evidently be some reduction in the cost of certain commodities, production charges would be considerably reduced and it was extremely likely that profits would increase greatly. Another unanimous resolution exexpressed complete opposition to any form of peace-time conscription and asked the Wellington Trades Council to endorse this attitude and refer it promptly to the Government.
