Austrian People’s Industrial Effort Promotes Recovery

LONDON, Aug. 31. ..The discipline and co-operation of the Austrian Government and people in their efforts to promote the recovery of their country were praised by Mr Westmore Willcox, head of the American Economic Co-operation Administration’s special mission to Austria. Mr Willcox likened the • selfdiscipline of the Austrian people to that of the British and said that he was confident that in spite of the four-Power occupation of Austria conditions would continue to improve. Production in the metallurgical industries had already improved 52 per cent, in the last year, in the chemical industry by 58 per cent., in the machinery manufacturing industries by 57 per cent., and in the manufacture of consumer goods by 37 to 66 per cent. DENMARK ABLE TO DROP RATIONING. LONDON, Aug. 31. The Danish Minister of Trade (Mr J. O. Krag) has announced the abolition of domestic coal rationing and a general increase of 25 per cent, in the supplies allocated to industrial consumers. The Minister said that bread rationing would also be relaxed immediately and - would be abolished comnletedy when Parliament meets in October. Businessmen are also to be permitted to purchase a daily allotment of foreign currency without applying to the National Bank.
