The Rehabilitation’ Department in Greymouth advanced more than £9OOO to ex-servicemen last month. A total of £4200 was for business loans, and two housing loans of £l5OO each. Furniture loans totalled £1035 and one farming loan was for £B5O. The slight distortion of broadcasts from 3YZ (formerly 3ZR), Gerymouth yesterday, due to the change from 940 to 920 kilocycles has been corrected. The technical staff of the station, after some hours work eliminated the cause of the trouble. A total of 5.12 in of rain fell on 12 days in August at Totara Flat. During August, Arahura dredge secured 954 ounces of gold from 243,000 yards of material secured in 513 hours’ dredging. Kanieri dredge won 1,126 ounces from 242,000 yards of material secured in 488 hours. Arahura dredge in the second half of the month won 487 ounces of gold from 136,000 yards of material secured in 278 hours’ dredging and Kanieri dredge secured 590 ounces from 141,000 yards of 'material in 261 hours.

Replying to a letter sent by _ a reader to the “Dominion,” Wellington, about the income tax rebate, the Commissioner of Taxes states.— “In cases where the incomes of husband and wife are agregated for taxation purposes, provision will be made for an allowance of two rebates in the joint assessment. The department will make the adjustment and it will not be necessary for the taxpayers in such cases to make any aippfication for separate asessments in order obtain the benefit of the twZ rebates.”

The New Zealand final of the Dame Nellie Melba Singing Scholarship contest was won last night at Dunedin, by Miss Dorothy Cayford, of Oamaru. Miss Noreen Cotter, of T’imaru, was second, and Miss Joy Swan, of Westport, was third. Miss Cayford will compete at Melbourne in the final next year.—P.A.
