CZECH REGIME’S BATTLE AGAINST THE CHURCH
LONDON, August 29. The Roman Catholic bishops in the churches throughout Chechoslovakia to-day read a defiant memorandum to the Government, says the British United Press correspondent at Prague. The memorandum calls upon the Government “to end its systematic battle against the church.” It also complains of the “secret fight against the Church and religion on the lines used against the Church in other countries.” The memorandum brings to a head the struggle between the Church and the State over the future of the Roman Catholic schools. The Government has demanded control of the schools. In retaliation, the Catholic Church has refused to endorse the Communist regime and the status of priests participating in politics.
