Dieppe Was Most Important Raid of War, Says Mountbatten
(Received August 29, 2.45 p.m.) OTTAWA, August 28. Earl Mountbatten, of Burma, who planned the Dieppe raid, of August, 1942, declared in a speech to-day, that it was “probably the most important raid of the war, and if 1 had the same decision to make again, I would do as I did before.” Earl Mountbatten said the raid, which was one of the most controversial actions of the war, had demonstrated the necessity for an artificial port. It probably ensured the success of the “D” Day landings, and became “the Bible” of assault operations in the Mediterranean. It fooled the Germans “utterly and completely,” into concentrating their defences on the ports, and leaving the beaches relatively open fo r “D ’ Day.
