(Rec. 9.50) NEW YORK, Aug. 28 Seared by the worst heat wave in years, 53 people have died throughout America in the last three days. Industry, in many parts of the country is at a standstill through employers walking off the job because of the heat.. „„„ _ , A temperature of 100.8 degrees in New York, was the highest since 1871, while Philadelphia, with 101 degrees, Phoenix (Arizona) 106, and Blythe (California), 107 degrees, were other cities which broke the century. The water consumption in New York yesterday was about 200 gallons a head, the highest in the city’s history. The Mayor (Mr William O’Dwyer), gave all New York employees except the police and firemen, half a holiday because of the heat.
