CANADA’S BIG BUTTER SHORTAGE

N.Z. Supplies Being Sought (Rec. 10.10) MONTREAL, Aug. 27 In an editorial to-day the newspaper, “Montreal Gazette," says: The Government of Canada is reported to be actively exploring the possibility of importing butter from New Zealand, or from Denmark, or from both to supplement the increasingly ominous reduction” in the Canadian butter stocks. It adds: It is not certain whether New Zealand butter is available, because of 'New Zealand’s commitments to Britain and Denmark. The retail price of New Zealand butter would be high unless the Canadian import duty was reduced, and the main hope ofrolief centres on the repeal or the suspension of the ban on margarine, which (it adds’) is recommended by the National Dairy Council, if other alternatives are impracticable. The total Canadian butter stocks on August 1, had dropped fourteen million five hundred thousand lbs below 1947, and the total deficiency m the winter will probably be twenty-five million lbs. •
