U.S. YACHTSMAN’S LONG CRUISE

SYDNEY. Aug. 10. An American yachtsman who has sailed 15,000 miles in his 26ft sloop wants two crew hands for a trip to the Barrier Reef, but says that no women need apply. He is a former United States naval lieutenant, William Weld, who, with two New Zealanders as a crew, sailed his yacht Pagan into fourth place in the transTasman race early this year. He has since refitted the yacht to continue a round the world cruise which the war interrupted. Mr Weld says that he has advertised for a crew of two for a five weeks’ cruise along the Barrier Reef, but that so far only women have applied. “I have had applications from women all shapes and sizes, he added. “Some have done a little smoothwater sailing and have read a lot of romantic stuff about tropical islands. But a small yacht on the open sea is no place for any woman.”
