RUGBY FOOTBALL WEST COAST UNION’S MEETING

The usual meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union was held last evening. Mr F. W. Baillie presided, also present being Messrs H. Clifford, R. Bunt, J. Jackson, E. Todd, W. Shannon, B. Ormandy, J. Laing, A. King, B. Watkins, S. McDonnell. The West Coast Rugby League conveyed its best wishes for a successful function at the opening of the grandstand. The telegram had arrived too late to be read out at the official function Blaketown were awarded the senior game against Cobden played at Rugby Park last Saturday, Cobden having played a non-Cobden player, and having agreed that the points should go to Blaketown. It was decided to have a photo of the new grandstand taken and also one of the members of the Union. Congratulations were extended to Star Club on their very successful jubilee function, and the able manner in which it was conducted. It was decided to write to Mr S. S. Dean thanking him for his visit to Greymouth. The fifth, sixth, and seventh grades were granted permission to travel to Reefton on September 15, for a field day, and Tech, fourth grade permission to play Hokitika High School next Monday. It was decided that West Coast fourth grade reps, play Inangahua, at Ikamatua on September 4. It was decided that shields in the Union’s possession be given to the winners of the fifth, sixth and seventh grade competitions. J. Goodall (Cobden) was regraded from senior to junior, also S. Garforth (Celtic). FIXTURES Senior: — Star v St. Mary’s, Park 1, 3 p.m. (A. Fong); Celtic v Cobden, Park 2, 3 p.m.; United v Kiwi, Hokitika (J. Lindbom); Excelsior v Blaketown at Hokitika. Junior: — Tech, v Celtic, Park 2, 1.30 p.m. (R. Ferguson); Cobden v Magpies, Park 1, 1.30 p.m. (R. Haglund); Star v Blaketown, Omoto, 1.30 p.m. (A. King). Third Grade: — Tech, v Celtic, Tech. 1.30 p.m. (L. Stewart). Cobden, a bye. Fourth Grade:— Tech, v Blaketown, Park 1, 11.30 (B. Thorburn); Hokitika v Celtic, Park 2, 10.30 (T. Anderson); Cobden, a bye. Fifth Grade:— Possibles v Probables, Park No. 1, 10.30 (M. Olsen). Sixth Grade:— Possibles v Probables, Park No. 2, 9.30 (J. Johnston). Westland Sub-union

At the weekly meeting of Westland Sub Union it was decided to postpone all junior fixtures on Saturday wdien Westland Junior reps, play St. Bedes College team from Christchurch at 2.45 p.m. Mr A. V. O’Brien was appointed referee. The following is the Westland team: — T , , . . Full-back, A. Wallace (Excelsiors) Captain; Three-quarters, K. Foster (Ross). N. Gardyne (Pirates), P. Nutting (St. Mary’s); Five-eighths, W. Manera (Ross). R. Cooke (Pirates); Half-back, A. Fearn (Kokatahi). Forwards: F. Stuart (Kokatahi), P. Tinetti (St. Mary’s), K. Thomas (Excelsiors), I. Wells (Kiwi), G. Howat (Pirates), G. Stopforth (St. Mary’s), J. Ferguson (Ross), P. Henderson (St. Mary’s). Reserves: Forwards. —K. O Neill (Ross), K. Mallock (Kiwis); Backs: D. Marsden (Excelsiors), R. Parker (Excelsiors). The team assemble at the ground at 2.15 p.m. ( The Snorts Master of St. Bedes College forwarded a list of the team to play Westland together witli their weights and ages, the list being handed to the selectors. Mr E. Langdon was appointed manager of the Westland team. G. Bruce was regraded to junior status. A donation of £3 was received with thanks towards a new ground at the racecourse. Accounts amounting to £3 13s were passed for payment. It was decided to ask for St. Mary’s senior team to have a home match on Saturday. The Buller Rugby Union advised that they would arrange a curtainraiser match between Westland and Buller juniors for the Seddon Shield match on September 4. The West Coast Union is to be advised that Pirates were the winners of the junior competition, and would play off for the Graham Wise Cup.
