Woman Given Probation for Fraud

PALMERSTON N„ August 6 “There seems to be a prevalent idea that probation is tantamount to being let off.” said Mr Justice Stanton in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North to-day, when sentencing Margaret Stuart Harvey to 12 months’ reformative dentention, concurrent, cn each of the charges of false pretences and attempted extortion.

The prisoner had previously been granted probation for an offence which might have incurred a heavier penalty, he said, but this _ had not proved a deterrent. The attitude that probation was a let-off might ultimately lead to reconsideration of the conditions on which probation could be granted.
