Fewer Whales Caught This Year

WELLINGTON, August 6 Hopes of bettering last year's record of 111 whale kills were small, said the manager of the Tory Channel whaling station, Mr J. A. Perano to-day. The present total was 92. Unless business quickened, the fleet would cease the season’s operations in three or four days, he added. No whales had been sighted for over a week. Between June 16 and July 10, 60 whales .were taken, but exceptionally bad weather and flooded rivers discolouring the waters of Cook Strait militated against the same success in subsequent operations, he said.
